Intact mountain forests serve as the basis for ecological equilibrium. They are an essential foundation for both human life and nature

In view of the anticipated climatic changes as well as the ever-increasing socio-economic and ecological demands being made upon the forests, strategies for the preservation of biological diversity within these forests must be developed.
By means of assistance from the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR), a cross-border consortium was established that can meet these challenges head on. The project with the working title "Forest Information System for the Northern Alps" is being funded out of the budget of the EFRE - The European Fund for Regional Development.

It is the goal of this project to develop, over the next three years, dependable information about land regarding, specifically, natural output potential for the mountain forests in Bavaria, Tyrol and the Salzburger Land. The respective project results shall then be made available in a user-friendly manner to the various user groups.

In the process BayFOR assumes, under the auspices of the scientific project coordinator – Weihenstephan University of Applied Sciences – the role as project manager and is responsible as well for dissemination of the project results.
