Mid-term review of the EU-Africa research partnership under Horizon Europe: €650 million for 368 projects

07/04/2025

The European Commission has published a new brochure on the Africa initiative under Horizon Europe 2021–2022. It shows impressively that the EU-Africa partnership in research and innovation is bearing fruit – in the form of 368 projects with African participation and an investment volume of around 650 million euros.

Investment volume of around 650 million euros

The funding focuses on the following areas: infectious diseases, sustainable development, the green transition, and strengthening scientific capacity and innovation. The projects are aligned with the four priority pillars of AU-EU cooperation:

  • Public health
  • Green transition
  • Innovation and technology
  • Scientific capacity building

A practical example: the EU project INCiTiS-FOOD

One example of this cooperation is INCiTiS-FOOD – an EU research project to develop integrated and circular technologies for sustainable food systems in African urban regions. The Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) was actively involved in the application and now plays a central role in the administrative and financial management of the project.

BayFOR: A Bridge between Bavaria and Africa in research and innovation

BayFOR‘s Scientific Cooperation Office (WKS) Bavaria-Africa supports stakeholders from science, industry and civil society in project development and application. The focus is on European funding programmes such as Horizon Europe and Erasmus+, but national programms or foundation funding are also targeted.
