Technology Council for Advanced Materials

Today, the Commission launched a call for applications for members of the new Technology Council for Advanced Materials. This high-level group will coordinate efforts to meet future needs for advanced materials in Europe and is key to building a single advanced materials ecosystem. It should ensure leadership in promoting research, fast-track deployment of innovations, address European industry needs and offer guarantees for an effective protection of human health and the environment. If you would like to apply as a Bavarian player, please let us know so that we can support you!

The Technology Council was announced in the Communication ‘Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership’ in February 2024. It will comprise representatives from Ministries of research and industry of Member States, high level representatives from the academic world, research and technology organisations, as well as industry and the Commission.

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said:

Europe’s long-term competitiveness relies on our technological edge, including the supply of advanced materials for the green and digital transitions. The Technology Council for Advanced Materials is part of our strategy to work together with the Member States, research organisations and industries to identify and address common needs for European leadership in advanced materials.  I encourage all stakeholders to engage in this important work.

Advanced materials are fundamental for innovation for example in energy, electronics, construction, and mobility and therefore crucial for the green and digital transitions. The Technology Council for Advanced Materials is a significant step for EU industries to be able to rely on advanced materials designed, developed, produced, and used in Europe.

Deadline for applications to be submitted by 9 September 2024 at the latest.

Background

Europe has a strong position in the development of advanced materials, but a step change is needed to bolster innovation in Europe. This is an another important workstream to ensure technological sovereignty and strategic autonomy. Research and innovation require more coordinated investments from the EU, national, regional, and private players, as well as increased circularity, and efficiency of materials, addressing vulnerabilities in supply chains and strengthening investor and consumer trust. The Communication of 27 February 2024 proposes 14 actions along these priorities to be implemented together with EU Member states, industry players and other key stakeholders.

Over the years, the EU Research and Innovation Framework programmes have actively supported R&I in advanced materials including for example the Graphene Flagship as well as several European Technology Platforms

and ERA-NETs. At European level, the Commission will also work with industry towards a future new partnership under Horizon Europe, Innovative Materials for the EU (“I’M4EU”).
