A more ambitious, simpler and quicker Union: The European Commission's work programme for 2025 and preparations for the MFF
Simplification is the name of the game: reduce complexity, increase speed
The 2025 omnibus package focuses on streamlined financial reporting, more practical sustainability requirements and streamlined authorisation procedures. SMEs should be able to grow more easily thanks to less red tape. The Common Agricultural Policy will also be streamlined, allowing farmers and authorities to focus on the essentials.
Sustainability and competitiveness
The EU must become climate neutral while remaining economically strong. The Competitiveness Compass points the way. Start-ups will have easier access to capital, and an industrial deal will cut emissions by 90% by 2040. The defence industry will be strengthened, dependencies reduced and crisis response speeded up.
An EU budget for the future
The new multiannual financial framework (MFF) starts in 2028 - and preparations are underway. The budget needs to be simpler, more flexible and more effective. A new competitiveness fund will strengthen strategic sectors, and reform of EU finances is essential. More own resources are needed to finance ambitious projects and to pay back NextGenerationEU.
A voice for all
Europe is discussing its budget: everyone can help shape the new financial framework through consultations, a citizens' forum and an EU-wide campaign. The proposal for the new financial framework will be presented in July 2025. Links to the consultations can be found here.
Conclusion: more efficient, more effective
The EU is repositioning itself: less bureaucracy, more dynamism, smarter financial planning. The 2025 work programme and the path to the new budget set the course for a more efficient Union. Find out more here.
