On 28 November 2024, in front of 200 guests, Bavaria's State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Tobias Gotthardt, opened the kick-off event of the BAIOSPHERE AI Compass. This innovative matchmaking tool is aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), AI experts, funding agencies and networks in the Bavarian AI ecosystem. The Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR), whose managing director is also the acting spokesperson of the Bavarian Research and Innovation Agency (BayFIA), is sponsoring the topic “Financing and Funding”.

Artificial Intelligence - Opportunity and Challenge

AI offers enormous potential, but often presents major hurdles, especially for SMEs. To overcome these, the Bavarian AI agency BAIOSPHERE has developed a free orientation tool. The AI compass helps companies to exploit the opportunities offered by the technology and to integrate it into their processes in a meaningful way. SMEs in particular will find practical support here to help them make the most of digital innovation.

Ten themes for AI success

The compass is divided into ten key themes:

• Organisation
• Technical requirements
• Talent and Skills
• Law and Regulation
• Ethics
• Strategy
• Data
• Ecosystem
• Financing and Funding
• Culture and mindset

The compass provides detailed explanations and practical tips for each area. An integrated AI chatbot answers specific questions, such as: ‘How can I foster a positive attitude towards AI among my employees?’ or ‘Does my company need a data scientist?’

BayFIA – Four strong partners for funding and financing

Each Topic Area is supported by a Topic Sponsor, a leading figure from science and industry. Martin Reichel, Managing Director of BayFOR and acting spokesperson for BayFIA, is the topic sponsor for the 'Financing and Funding' area. Rainer Sessner, Managing Director of Bayern Innovativ, another of the four BayFIA partner organisations, is one of the topic sponsors for 'Culture and mindset'. BayFIA’s four partner organisations, the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR), Bayerische Forschungsstiftung, Bayerische Patentallianz (BayPAT) and Bayern Innovativ, support SMEs and universities in the acquisition of funding - whether from the Free State of Bavaria, the federal government or the EU. The agency also provides advice on technology transfer and patent exploitation.

BayFOR is an indispensable partner, especially for European funding projects. It provides expert assistance, usually free of charge, in finding international cooperation partners, selecting suitable calls for proposals and preparing promising applications.

Funding as the key to innovation

„Funding programmes are essential for realising AI projects, accelerating innovation and ensuring that our economy remains competitive," emphasises Martin Reichel. „Our task is to support the relevant stakeholders according to their needs and to promote forward-looking technologies that will sustainably strengthen society and the economy," says Martin Reichel, spokesman for BayFIA and CEO of BayFOR.

An EU-funded project for the future of Bavaria

The Bavarian AI agency BAIOSPHERE is also part of an EU project. In the EU project ‘Digital Innovation Ostbayern (DInO)’, a team of networkers, researchers and start-up consultants is working to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public institutions introduce new digital concepts. The Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) played a key advisory role in the funding application and is an associated partner.
