New research association FORinFPRO: 2 million euros for the development of AI-based and self-adapting manufacturing processes

On 12 December 2023, the Board of Trustees of Bayerische Forschungsstiftung decided to support the Bavarian research association "Intelligent Manufacturing Processes & Closed-Loop Production - FORinFPRO" with around 2 million euros.

EIC work programme 2024 published

The EU Commission has adopted the European Innovation Council (EIC) 2024 work programme. It opens funding opportunities worth over €1.2 billion in 2024. The majority is dedicated to SMEs and start-ups to develop and scale up “deep tech” innovations in critical fields such as generative artificial intelligence (AI), space, critical raw materials, semiconductors and quantum technologies.

New research association ForGeRex to analyse and combat right-wing extremism in Bavaria

An interdisciplinary research association consisting of 18 scientists from eleven Bavarian universities of applied sciences, universities and non-university research institutions is starting its work to deepen scientific knowledge on the topic of right-wing extremism. The ForGeRex network - Research Network for Contemporary Analyses, Remembrance Practice and Counter-Strategies to Right-Wing Extremism in Bavaria - is being funded for four years by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts with a total of 4.5 million euros.

New European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed) established

The newly launched European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed) aims to improve future healthcare for all citizens through personalised therapy, diagnosis and prevention. With a total budget of around €375 million, provided by the EU and more than 50 international partners, EP PerMed will not only significantly support the transnational development of personalised medicine approaches over the next ten years, but also their successful translation into clinical practice. A preliminary announcement for the first joint transnational call for proposals has now been published.

The role of universities of applied sciences (UAS) in the reform of research assessment CoARA

The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is a European initiative (2022) to reform research assessment. The aim is to promote a holistic approach to the assessment of scientific performance, based primarily on qualitative rather than quantitative indicators. The success of this reform initiative depends on the broad participation of different institutions. The participation of universities of applied sciences, with their practice-oriented, transdisciplinary research, is particularly important.

Association with "Horizon Europe": News on the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada

From 1 January 2024, the United Kingdom will participate in the EU research and innovation programme "Horizon Europe" and the EU Earth observation programme "Copernicus" under the same conditions as its partners in the EU Member States. The EU and Canada are currently finalising their negotiations on association with Horizon Europe. The association agreement is expected to be signed in 2024. The EU has also declared its willingness to enter into talks on Switzerland's association with Horizon Europe.
