VD17

In the VD17 project all prints in the German language area from the 17th century are inventorized. They are stored in the distributed DBMS OMNIS/Myriad. Aside from purely textual catalog data, important key pages of all expected 250.000 items are scanned and made available as raster images. Users, then, can use any WWW browser to query the catalog database and, if desired, to display the image pages. Inserting the catalog data and film preparation / scanning of document pages is done in six centers (see project partners below). Optical storage media in juke boxes serve to host more than one million images.

Application:
Although under development, VD17 already in active use by the worldwide commmunity of historians, with queries coming, e.g., from USA and South Africa.
