B4: Load oriented cold forging tools with locally optimized tool surfaces
In cold forging, tools are exposed to extremely high loads, due to high forming stresses and strain hardening of the material. The tool surface is of high importance for the prevailing of failure reasons like wear and fatigue. Subject of this research project are highly loaded cold forging tools where fatigue as well as wear appear simultaneously and lead to an early tool failure. The main aim of this project is to find an optimized tool surface which is locally adapted to the tool load by means of different methods like surface texturing, laser beam hardening or flat and hard rolling. To be able to optimize the parameters of surface treatment for the demands of cold forging, extended calculation possibilities in FE simulation are used in this project. This is necessary to open up new potentials for the forging industry to increase tool life.
