Bavarian Minister of Science and Art Bernd Sibler leads mission to Québec
He was accompanied by 20 high-ranking representatives of Bavarian universities and two members of the Bavarian state parliament. The visit served as the perfect occasion to renew the cooperation declaration signed in 2014 between the Bavarian Ministry of Science and the Arts and the Québec FRQ Research Foundation. The agreement focuses on scientific cooperation between the two regions in key areas of natural, technological, and health research.
As part of the mission, an expert symposium on the challenges of artificial intelligence in research and teaching was held in Montréal on 15 April. A fundamental change to the traditional, university-based systems of knowledge transfer is underway in both Bavaria and Québec, and holds great potential for future bilateral cooperation projects on topics such as ethics in artificial intelligence. In particular, the founding of the "International Observatory of the Effects of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence on Society" has been followed with great interest in Bavaria. The Québec approach to digitisation within universities was another focus of the symposium, and the delegation visited universities to deepen this theme during their time in Québec.
The cooperation between Bavaria and Québec will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2019.
