As a joint initiative, the German Embassy in Israel, the State of Bavaria’s Office in Israel and the Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Israel of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) are holding an Online Expert Discussion on “Climate-neutral and Smart cities and the Role of Research and Innovation: Munich and Tel Aviv” on 29 June 2021 at 10:00 (CET). The event focuses on the proposed EU Mission “100 Climate-Neutral Cities by 2030 - by and for the citizens” and presents different perspectives to shed light on the specific chances and challenges in the field of research. The event is organized by the State of Bavaria's Office in Israel.

The expert discussion is joint by Dr. Laura Hetel from the the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, Christine Kugel, Head  of Department for  Climate  and  Environmental  Protection at the Municipality of Munich, Guy Deknuydt Climate Action Plan Coordinator at the Environmental Authority at the Municipality of Tel Aviv, Prof. Thomas Auer, Chair of Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design at the Technical University of Munich and Dr. Orli Ronen Rotem, Head  of  the  Urban Innovation  and  Sustainability  Lab  at  the  Porter School for Environmental and Social Studies of the Tel Aviv University.

Mitigating climate change at a global scale is a huge challenge and requires a comprehensive support of al societal players. Cities cover about 3% of the land on earth, yet they produce about 72% of all global greenhouse gas emission. In Europe, it is estimated that by 2050 almost 85% of Europeans will be living in cities. “100 Climate-Neutral Cities by 2030 - by and for the citizens” – this is one out of five EU missions, which were formulated at the beginning of the new EU research framework program Horizon Europe and which aims to promote this field of research in particular.

The experts discuss the broad field of climate change and urbanisation as well as the proposed mission’s goals and its role for research and innovation against the background of different perspectives and experiences.
