Welcome to our next edition of the Bavaria-Africa Bulletin.
At the Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Africa (WKS Bavaria-Africa), which is part of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR),
our mission is to foster and deepen collaboration between stakeholders
in Bavaria and Africa within research and innovation. We are dedicated
to offering comprehensive support for identifying suitable funding
sources and preparing project proposals for European or (inter)national
funding programs that encourage the involvement of African and Bavarian
project partners.
The third edition in 2024 comes with a variety
of interesting events and funding opportunities across different areas
of science and innovation. This edition has the "Effective ambulance

Assessment of Soil Health in Africa HORIZON-MISS-2024-SOIL-01-09
This
call aims for activities, which focus on developing a scalable
Africa-wide soil health dashboard by leveraging existing data and
projects. They aim to fill soil knowledge gaps through new data
collection and stakeholder engagement, improve dashboard accuracy,
identify critical soil health thresholds, and develop roadmaps to track
policy impacts on soil health. Additionally, the activities will support
at least eight African countries in creating national soil health
strategies, including use cases and training for data interpretation and

Belmont Forum “Africa Regional Call”: BMBF Funding for Water Energy Food Health Nexus
The
Belmont Forum is an international association of funding organisations,
scientific committees and regional consortia. This year, the Africa
Regional Call ( ARC) was published for the three focus topics: Area 1 – Water – Energy – Food – Health Nexus ; Area 2 – Pollution ; Area 3 – Disaster Preparedness, Responsiveness, and Recovery. AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grants for Junior Researchers
The
“AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grant for Junior Researchers,” funded by
the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and
supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), aims to
strengthen scientific capacity and networking among young African
researchers. AGNES (African-German Network of Excellence in
Science) offers two grants for sub-Saharan Africa: the General AGNES
Grant (for both male and female candidates) and the Special AGNES Grant
(for female candidates only), encouraging applications from all research
fields without geographical quota restrictions within sub-Saharan

AGNES Junior Researcher Grants (JRG) Programmes
Funded
by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
and supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), this grant
aims to enhance scientific capacity in sub-Saharan Africa by funding
exceptional male and female PhD holders and mentoring them for AvH
fellowship programs. AGNES (African-German Network of Excellence in
Science) offers two nomination-only Junior Researcher Grants: the

BMEL: Agroecological innovations for territorial markets
Under
the funding instrument “International research cooperation for global
food security”, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL)
published the fifth call for research proposals on “Agroecological
innovations for territorial markets”. The announcement focuses on
research into the potential of agroecology for territorial markets and
value chains in order to improve food security locally and thus
indirectly promote a sustainable transformation of agricultural and food

AIMS-DFG: Call for German-African Cooperation Visits in the Mathematical Sciences 2024
Through
this call, the African Institutes for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and
the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)
aim to foster international research collaborations between
mathematicians from African countries and Germany. Early-career
researchers are especially encouraged to submit proposals. Only
researchers based in Germany are eligible to submit proposals, with
their African counterparts participating as collaboration partners and

Innowwide Call 2024
Innowwide
is a funding programme for innovative SMEs and start-ups from all
sectors of participating countries. It supports them in tapping into
international target markets. To this end, the programme promotes
bilateral projects to carry out market feasibility studies for
innovative solutions. Participating SMEs can collaborate with local
organisations in their chosen target countries (Africa, America, Asia,
or Oceania) over a period of six months and receive funding of €60,000. Deadline: 15/10/2024 Read more |
MIASA Fellowship Programme
The
Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is dedicated to
research in the Humanities and Social Sciences and offers four types of
fellowships: Tandem Fellowship, Interdisciplinary Fellow Group,
Individual Fellowship and Artists in Residence. The research should take
up at least one of the thematic areas under the overarching topic
‘sustainable governance’: environment, democracy, peace, and/or
cross-cutting issues like landownership, acquisition, migration and
mobility, restitution of colonially acquired cultural objects, African

ASA NGO Programme
ASA
NGO is aimed at non-governmental organisations (NGOs), foundations,
grassroots initiatives and implementing organisations of German
development cooperation with international projects and their partners
in Africa, Asia, Latin America or South-Eastern Europe. It supports
institutions pursuing social, ecological, and economic sustainability
goals. It provides young people dedicated to fair and sustainable
development with opportunities to participate in specific projects, gain
insight into the institution's work, and exchange experiences. Eligible
to participate are students, people with a Bachelor’s degree or young
professionals who have completed vocational training between the age of
21 and 30.

ASA Academia Programme
The
aim of ASA Academia is to promote commitment to global sustainability
in science. ASA Academia is aimed at higher education institutes and
universities operating in Germany with international projects or partner
structures that are committed to sustainability and innovation in
research practice. The ASA Programme is an exchange and scholarship
initiative focused on development policy for students and young
professionals from Germany and Africa, Asia, Latin America, and
South-Eastern Europe. It is provided by Engagement Global gGmbH on

Tenure Track Professorship – Wübben Stiftung Wissenschaft
The
Wübben Stiftung Wissenschaft’s Tenure Track Professorship programme
supports German universities in appointing and onboarding outstanding
researchers from around the globe for tenure track positions by funding
part of the first years of the professorship. Applications can be
submitted for candidates who hold a doctorate and have lived and worked

Safe-the-Date: Cooperation Lounge Africa-Europe: Science meets Politics In
collaboration with the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to
the EU, the Scientific Coordination Office (WKS) Bavaria-Africa of the
Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) invites you to Brussels on 10 and 11
December 2024. Under the theme ‘Science meets Politics’, the
Cooperation Lounge Africa-Europe will promote international dialogue
between Africa, Europe, and Bavaria in research and innovation. This
event will focus on the intersection of science and politics and the
advancement of ‘science diplomacy’. Attendees can look forward to a
high-level networking event featuring engaging keynotes, panel

Global Bioeconomy Summit 2024
The
Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) is an international gathering of
bioeconomy leaders, representing diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
For the first time, it will be held outside Europe in Nairobi, Kenya.
GBS2024 will focus on resilient and sustainable food systems, the
bioeconomy as a model for reducing fossil fuel dependency, biodiversity
conservation, and innovation-driven economic opportunities, especially
for youth employment. Established in 2015, the GBS promotes global
innovation and collaboration through dialogue among bioeconomy experts

Peatlands and Ecosystem Functions - iPSC The
Peatland Science Centre (PSC) invites you to the international Peatland
Science Conference (iPSC), a three-day event exploring scientific and

carbon reservoirs, drawing significant public and political attention.
The conference features two days of scientific discussions and practical
sessions, followed by field excursions to Bavaria's peatlands on the

annual interdisciplinary conference on research in tropical and
subtropical agriculture, natural resource management and rural
development (Tropentag) is jointly organised by the universities of

Ghent University, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, BOKU Vienna,
and the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research in cooperation

Reconfigurations in Africa - and in African Studies
The
Institute of African Studies at the University of Bayreuth is proud to
host the biannual conference of the Association for African Studies in
Germany e.V. (VAD). The conference theme, "Reconfigurations in Africa -
and in African Studies," explores current and historical crises and
transformation processes on the African continent. It also emphasizes
the importance of critically reflecting on academic, artistic, and other
approaches globally to enhance knowledge production. The conference
aims to facilitate dialogue between Africa-related institutions outside
of Africa, such as museums, universities, and associations, and their

Introducing Mekdelawit Yeshitila (PhD.) We
have a new Head of Office: On the 1st of June, 2024, Mekdelawit
Yeshitila has started her new role as Head of the Bavarian Office for
Africa. With a diverse academic profile that encompasses studies in
Thailand, Germany, and Ethiopia, as well as multiple years of work
experience in German development cooperation projects, Mekdelawit is
more than a fitting choice to lead the Bavarian Office for Africa. Read more |

Visit in Bavaria From
the 17th to the 30th of June, the Bavarian Office for Africa,
represented by Head of Office Mekdelawit Yeshitila and Project Manager
Petros Mulugeta, visited Bavaria and had meetings with various partners.
Throughout these engagements with Bavarian stakeholders, the office
focused on creating new and deepening existing connections, thereby
advocating for even closer collaborations between Bavaria and Africa.

newsletter issue, we present a research or innovation project from our
Stakeholder Map with Bavarian and African participation. |

Access to medical assistance: optimising the ambulance system for managing rescue operations
This
project is led by the Technical University of Applied Sciences
Würzburg-Schweinfurt (Bavaria, Germany) in close collaboration with the
Ghanaian partners Cape Coast Technical University and KAAF University
College. The project is funded through the ASA programme, managed by
Engagement Global gGbmH through the BMZ. Together, the project partners
are organising capacities for rescue missions for women and children
near the Ghanaian capital Accra to combat the high maternal and infant
mortality rate. The deployment plans and routes of the ambulances are
planned and coordinated from a local control centre using software
already developed in the project. Students contribute and develop
personal skills in this project and support organisations in collecting
and analysing geodata in order to optimise the software and operations. More information |
