At the Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Africa, part of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR), our mission is to foster and deepen collaboration between stakeholders in Bavaria and Africa within the realm of research and innovation. We are dedicated to offering comprehensive support for identifying suitable funding sources and preparing project proposals for European or national funding programs that encourage the involvement of African stakeholders.
Our quarterly newsletter serves as a crucial bridge, concisely summarizing ongoing project calls across a wide range of fields, including health, social sciences, STEM, and environmental sciences. Furthermore, we are committed to keeping you informed about upcoming events within these areas of interest. In each edition, we shine a spotlight on a collaborative project that brings together Bavarian and African partners and showcases the remarkable work of these project teams.

Celebration of the German Unity Day
The 33rd German Unity Day celebration, organized by the Bavarian Office for Africa in cooperation with the German Embassy in Addis Ababa, ended with a success with over 1,500 attendees, including prominent Ethiopian ministers, Ambassadors and diplomats, African Union and European Union delegates, and distinguished guests from the private sector. The event featured a Bavarian beer garden and traditional Bavarian dishes. Moreover, the event included speeches by the German Ambassador to Ethiopia, the head of the African Department at the Bavarian State Chancellery, and the Ethiopian Minister of Finance and presentations by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Menschen für Menschen, and bbw. Learning Lions
Learning Lions is a social enterprise founded in 2014, that provides digital training and empowerment programs for youth in East Africa. Through support from the Bavarian State Chancellery, it equips young people from remote regions with IT skills and thus creates opportunities for the local youth and addresses challenges faced by the region’s impoverished communities. The Free State of Bavaria has contributed over 1.2 million Euros in two phases for the construction of the Start-up Lions Campus, situated in the rural town of Loropio at the shores of Lake Turkana in Kenya. Through an integrative approach, the project impacts the lives of many within the local communities and beyond, while marking key milestones in the field of digital education. Read more

African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences
The African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences is a project directed by Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Scienes (HSWT) and funded by the Bavarian State. The goal is to establish a network between the HSWT and partner institutions from Ethiopia, Senegal, Tunisia and South Africa (Gauteng & Western Cape). The Alliance is intended as a lively exchange platform for practice-based teaching in the life sciences. More information
